Centre for Leadership

Leadership is a professional trait fundamental to all aspects of any business. Ensuring that talented individuals moving up to middle management learn the necessary skills and ideas that distinguish leaders from managers is a critical issue in many organisations.

The Leading Edge Program is offered through the Centre for Leadership, an initiative of the Joondalup Learning Precinct (JLP) partners. The program will be delivered through the shared facilities of the three precinct partners’ campuses.

“I decided to enrol in this program because I wanted to achieve a better understanding organisational leadership to assist my career development and to benefit my own organisation. The program emphasised the importance of reflection and reinforced the importance of the ‘individual’ within the organisation. The most beneficial aspect of this program have been the networks I’ve developed with individuals from other organisations as well as enhancing my understanding of the leadership role within my own organisation. The study experience has been pleasant. The lecturers are first rate and adept at translating theories into tangible work place applications.”

“This program has assisted me by providing a formal arena to learn, develop skills, share experiences and reflect on many aspects of work and future direction. The most beneficial aspect of this program for me has been the sharing and learning from fellow participants and key note speakers. It’s been a fantastic opportunity to embrace learning, develop new skills and reflect on current practice. The facilitators have been excellent.”

“I had been looking for a Leadership Program that not only focussed on classroom learning about the principles and theories but also included aspects of hands on learning by being able to implement and test these principles in the workplace as part of the learning process. This program has met all these needs combined with group reflection and discussion as well as working towards obtaining a formal qualification.”

The Leading Edge Program

The Leading Edge enhances participants’ capabilities for leading staff to achieve organisational goals. It is open to eligible employees entering leadership positions in any WA organisation, and is customised as much as possible to the interests of represented organisations.

It comprises three units over a minimum of 12 months:

Unit 1: Becoming a Leader - Three weekend workshops (Fri– Sat) plus three after-work sessions for peer-mentoring and information exchange. Topics include the nature of leadership, self-awareness, achieving focus, emotional intelligence, communication, teamwork, coaching, politics and influence, becoming a change agent and developing community relationships.

Unit 2: Leading Edge Concepts - Three weekend workshops (Fri – Sat ) and three after-work sessions. Topics include new concepts of leadership, are leaders born or made, transformational leadership, ethics, cross-cultural leadership and the psychology of leader-follower relations.

Unit 3: Taking the Lead - Work-based project guided by lecturers through individual consultation.

The workshops are presented by academic staff and industry trainers, and include discussions with guest executives. We employ experiential learning, integrating participants’ workplace experiences with ideas presented by facilitators. Optional low-cost accommodation for workshops is available.

Recognising that learning must be integrated into the workplace, workshops are supplemented by follow-up meetings to discuss implementation issues. Site visits to peers workplaces and a substantial workplace leadership project of value to the organisation also provide experiential learning.

Qualifications and Further Learning

The Leading Edge provides 3 units credit towards a Graduate Certificate of Business in Leadership or Management, or other relevant postgraduate qualification. Graduates can continue into a Graduate Diploma or MBA.

Graduates are invited to continue learning through occasional events where they share insights, discuss leadership issues, meet industry leaders and extend their professional networks.
